Activities:

West Virginia University is partnering with the New River Gorge National Park to perform energy analysis and diagnostic studies. The project will be conducted from May 15, 1999 through August 15, 1999 and will be run by Dr. Ralph W. Plummer and Dr. B. Gopalakrishnan of WVU. The project covers the following three major areas:

Heating, Ventilation, and Air conditioning (HVAC) Systems: There will be energy assessments conducted on the HVAC systems for buildings in the park focusing on items including building insulation, economizer additions to air conditioners, the efficiency of heating systems, and destratification.

Solar Power Systems: The prospect of installing solar powered generation will be investigated for certain suitable locations. Equipment specification, energy savings analysis, cost savings, and implementation suggestions will be presented.

Lighting Systems: The efficiency of lighting systems will be studied. Suggestions will be made regarding suitable lighting and ballast systems. Also, motion sensor use will be studied along with light reduction based on work content. Equipment specification, energy savings analysis, cost savings, and implementation suggestions will be presented.

Other important goals of the project include increasing energy conservation awareness among Park personnel through various methods and providing students with energy conservation experience.

Updates and Pictures:

On May 14, Dr. Plummer, Dr. Gopalakrishnan, and Michelle Monday, visited the Glen Jean Headquarters of the New River Gorge National Park. There they met with Chuck Ross, the Facilities Manager and some of his colleagues including the Park Superintendent. They visited buildings at the Park and observed energy usage in terms of lighting, HVAC systems, building construction, and other energy related parameters. In addition, during the month of May, Michelle has conducted research to find various types of energy saving opportunities that are commercially available for installation.
