Project Descriptions:
Utah's National Parks, Utah State University, and the Utah Office of Energy and Resource Planning are working together to conduct the following activities under the UNPEPP agreement:
Utility Tracking: A short-term goal of all National Parks is to reduce the cost of annual energy consumption. The student intern will perform site visits to audit utility billing data and verify meter numbers, proper measurement of utility use, and assignment of meters to specific loads. The energy audits will provide meter and connected load information, past billing records, and facility information. Past and current energy consumption data will be analyzed to identify cost and energy savings opportunities and billing discrepancies will be audited to identify credit opportunities.
Utility Database: The Utah Office of Energy and Resource Planning is involved in a regional effort to develop, expand, update, and verify a database of current energy consumption for National Parks. The student intern will perform site visits to gather information and reconcile questions involving energy use, expenditures, utility providers, account numbers, meter numbers, facility type, and the square footage associated with each meter.
Renewable Energy: Utah's National Parks are actively working to install photovoltaic systems as the main source of power for park facilities where fossil fuel generators are currently used. The generators are converted to provide backup/supplemental power production. The student intern will monitor cost reductions and environmental benefits at sites currently utilizing photovoltaic power generation and work with other parks to identify energy cost reduction opportunities.
The following Utah National Parks are participating in the project:
- Bryce Canyon National Park
- Canyonlands National Park
- Capitol Reef National Park
- Cedar Breaks National Monument
- Dinosaur National Monument
- Golden Spike National Historic Site
- Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
- Zion National Park
- Timpanogos Cave National Monument
