Project Descriptions:
The University of Michigan College of Architecture is partnering with Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to identify and implement two energy saving projects, including the research and design of a Photovoltaic System and an Energy Audit and Analysis for the Park headquarters.
Photovoltaic (PV) System Analysis - Research the potential use of PV systems for different sites in the park. The University will:
- Evaluate potential sites for the PV system;
- Conduct load analysis for the equipment to be powered;
- Determine the PV modules and components to be used;
- Determine the cost based vendor information.
Energy Audit and Analysis for the Park Headquarters - Provide a comprehensive study on the building components and cost analysis. The University will:
- Gather information about the building and its performance;
- Identify strategies for energy conservation specific to the building;
- Conduct energy simulation analyses;
- Conduct cost analysis of the recommendations.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will:
- Provide short-term housing for students and faculty in order to conduct the research;
- Provide access to the building and data necessary to conduct the activities specific to the project;
- Provide access to the building blue prints and utility bill data;
- Provide insights and identification of opportunities for the application of renewable energy technologies;
- Provide information, assistance, and materials to conduct the project;
- Work with the University of Michigan faculty to identify possible long-term collaboration between the college and the park.
