UNPEPP Projects by Year
Fact Sheet on FY2005/06 UNPEPP Projects
-
South Dakota State University and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park
Title: Design, Acquisition and Installation of a Photovoltaic System at the West McCarthy Site
Description: This project involves the design, acquisition and installation of a hybrid PV system at the West McCarthy site; the project is in conjunction with a course at SDSU which teaches students to design and install a PV system. The PV system will decrease generator runtime and diesel fuel usage, benefiting the park's pristine natural environment. As an additional public educational component, the SDSU partners will develop a web site describing the project and outcomes.
-
University of Washington and Ebey's Landing National Historic Reserve
Title: Renewable Solar Energy for Ebey's Landing National Historic Reserve
Description: This project examines the potential for solar PV implementation at Ebey's Landing. The plans and objectives of the project include: visiting Ebey's Landing and carefully evaluating the potential sites for suitability of solar PV. The solar PV system being considered is a nominal 1 kw-rated grid-tied system. The main components will be the PV panels and the DC-to-AC inverter. On a sunny summer day, the system will generate 5-6 kwh of electrical energy.
-
Georgia Institute of Technology and Jimmy Carter National Historic Site
Title: Energy Assistance Project for Jimmy Carter National Historic Site
Description: The goal of this project is to assist Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in meeting energy use and cost reduction goals. The university partners will: conduct on-site energy assessments; develop a building energy baseline; develop energy conservation measures and analyze the economics of identified opportunities; and finally, provide an energy characterization of park facilities, identifying energy saving opportunities.
-
Rochester Institute of Technology and Women's Rights National Historic Site
Title: Energy Audit and Improvement/Investment Strategy for Women's Rights National Historic Site
Description: The primary objective of this project is to conduct an energy audit of existing buildings and building envelopes. Identified energy conservation measures will be grouped to distinguish between short-, medium- and long term improvements and investments. As additional educational components: a) the students will prepare an academic paper detailing the experiential education aspect of the project to encourage using students to assist in energy conservation projects for the public sector; and b) the results of the energy conservation measures will be tracked in future energy management and policy coursework to demonstrate the value of conservation.
-
Rutgers University and Morristown National Historic Park
Title: Energy/Water Audit and Improvement/Investment Strategy for Morristown National Historic Park
Description: The objective of this project is to conduct energy and water audits at fifteen park structures so that feasibility for improved energy and water efficiency, as well as use of renewable energy, can be identified. The project also seeks to identify opportunities for energy conservation education so that the importance of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability can be communicated to the public.
-
Humboldt State University and Redwood National Park
Title: Installation of a Hybrid Solar Electric System at Espa Lagoon
Description: The project's goal is to design and install a hybrid solar electric system at a ranger residence on Espa Lagoon, in the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park unit of Redwood National and State Parks. The design and site analysis is based upon recommendations made by previously in 2000. The objective of the summer 2006 UNPEPP project is to work with Schatz Energy Research Center (SERC) to review and update the 2000 design and replace diesel generators with a hybrid solar electric system consisting of a photovoltaic array and a backup propane generator, along with the associated power handling equipment.
